Sighting for July 26, 2020

Jesse & Jack Connor

Our yard in Port Republic
Atlantic County, NJ

We had seven to eight looks at a male pipevine st as it zigged and zagged around the edge of the garden, dog-fighting with monarchs on and off. Did not land once while we watched, however, and we have not yet managed a photo, unfortunately. Hoping for a return and better luck next time!

[Congrats to Jack and Jesse for their excellent find. This is by far our log's lastest FOY for pipevine swallowtail (previous record was 7/4/18). It is interesting to note that we recorded our FOY before 6/1 in 7 of our first 8 years. In the last 5 years, the FOY date has been 6/13, 6/26, 7/14, 6/19 and 7/27. What has happened to the first brood in SNJ? - jm]
