South Jersey Butterfly Project
My backyard in Mickleton
Gloucester County, NJ
I had been finding the American Lady cats on the Antennaria neglecta and the Anaphalis margaritacea but this is the first American Lady butterfly I have seen this year. This is the 2nd Sleepy Orange and I followed it to where it landed under the Spiraea tomentosa where I was able to get the photo. Also saw the first Monarch cat on the Asclepias tuberosa today.
[Good find, Lucy. Your two recent sleepy orange reports are only our 3rd and 4th reports of the species in Gloucester County in our log's history. We have had three reports this year, including the one by Steve Glynn in Riverwinds in May, but previously only one other: J. Gutsmuth and Chip Krilowicz in Wheelabrator in December 2016. Your reports and photos hint that the species may be expanding in South Jersey, heading north from the known colonies in CUM.]
