Sighting for July 24, 2021

Meredith Koenig

My small woods, Eat Vineland
Cumberland County, NJ

I was very surprised, walking a path of the wooded part of my property around 9am, to see this Mourning Cloak rise up and fly smoothly away. I checked the latest Leplog and was glad to read that such a sighting might be expected at this time. Also, two tiny Monarch Cats tucked into very young Common Milkweed shoot. Monarch(s) flying all day, probably already counted.

[Although not common, the log does receive reports of MC in July most years. It is often a "how unusual!" moment. -jm]
