August 2014 Sightings

Red-banded Hairstreak: nectared on asclepias tuberosa, zinnia profusion. Also spent some time on watermelon rind.; Red-spotted Purple: one was chased around by a very determined male Spicebush Swallowtail; Sachem: 2 males, 3 females; Zabulon Skipper: 3 males 1 female; Ocola Skipper: Photographed nectaring on Buddleia

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail: a male and a female; Zabulon Skipper: 1 female; Dun Skipper: very worn

Heather showed me several images that she took while working at the small butterfly house at the park. Heather also has worked hard to make Chestnut Branch's butterfly garden what it is. She also shared an image of a Zebra Swallowtail taken last year at Chestnut Branch park!

Red-banded Hairstreak: all three on small flowered Rudbeckia; Sachem: late afternoon visit here. Sachems mainly on Zinnia & Marigolds

Black Swallowtail: a male and a female laying eggs on Queen Anne's Lace; Pearl Crescent: males nectaring on Common Cat's Ear; Tawny-edged Skipper: a fresh female; Sachem: 10 females; Aaron's Skipper: nectaring on Chinese Bush Clover and Common Cat's Ear; Dun Skipper: a female laying eggs; Salt Marsh Skipper: nectaring on Chinese Bush Clover; Ocola Skipper: on Common Cat's Ear

Ocola Skipper: nectaring on Slender Bush Clover in Pine Barrens habitat

Monarch: 4th instar cat on Com.Milkweed; Horace's Duskywing: fresh female; Swarthy Skipper: very few seen here this year. Usually very reliable; Peck's Skipper: both on a tiny stand of NY Ironweed; Crossline Skipper: fresh male on white clover; Sachem: clearly the dominant grass skipper here right now

Black Swallowtail: a mint fresh male; Zabulon Skipper: 2 females

Giant Swallowtail: my fourth
