June 2016 Sightings

Steven Glynn and Harvey Tomlinson

Hunters Mill Bog powerline along 1st Ave.
Atlantic County, NJ

Emergence of Bog Coppers just starting. Power line area was cleared/chained earlier this year and cleared of all tree and shrubs, extensively in both directions, with only short, new growth now at about two-months growing stage. Hairstreaks along this power line, including in the critical habitat at Hesstown, may all be lost, at least for this season.

Moderator's Note: Frustrating to hear about. Somehow we need to convince more people of the value of these habitats. jc

Two small stands of dogbane & common milkweed consistently host a handful of Banded Hairstreaks here each year. Found the first of these today nectaring on Dogbane. Silver spotted Skipper was nectaring on Viburnum dentatum, a favorite nectar source for R.B. Hairstreaks & Summer Azures.

Moderator's Note: Dave has kicked off our Satyrium season with this find of banded hairstreak. Get ready, everyone: here they come!
