September 2016 Sightings

Monarchs recorded for 8th day in a row here.

Even though it was cloudy, I recorded 18 different butterfly species. A Southern Cloudywing made it into September.

All on Buddleia.

Found a lone Eastern Tailed-Blue at White Clover late in the day.

I found five butterfly species active in a warm and light rain!

A 'Summer Form' Question Mark landed on the back porch screen door.

The diversity was real good for this location. The second brood of Georgia satyr is winding down.

Silver spotted skipper 11:38 am. 2 Monarchs sighted together 2:40-45pm, skippers plentiful in garden daily.

Guided nature hike, 2.3 miles

Nectar sources here are: NY Ironweed,Goldenrod,& a White Eupatorium sp.

Meadow Fritillaries fought off my efforts for a decent photo today. Observed a Black Swallowtail laying eggs on previously mowed Queen Anne's Lace. Observations made from 4-5:25 p.m.

[This is the first meadow frit report since July 16 –apparently, the first of the third ("late summer") brood. Nice! jc]

Most of the Buckeyes here were nectaring on climbing hempweed.

Area recently mowed, not much nectar

Narrow-leaved Eupatorium in bloom in fields attracting variegated frit., common wood nymph, sachems, orange sulphur, and monarch. White M on the same plant in the garden but only a brief look. Did not walk into tall grasses–fearing chiggers–so underestimated sachems and eastern tailed-blues. Also one monarch cat on c. milkweed.

The Monarchs keep drifting through this property.

There were Cloudless Sulphurs, Cabbage Whites and Sachems on this trip - Rte. 47 (a Cloudless Sulphur), downtown CMCH (2 Cabbage Whites, 2 Cloudless Sulphurs and 6 Sachems) and Rte. 9 (4 Sachems and a Cloudless Sulphur).

30 Monarch cats ran out of food, relocated to fresh milkweed.

Do not clearly remember butterflies getting nectar from Primrose species and have seen moths on them near dark in the past. In this context, it was a surprising for me to see a Cloudless Sulphur stop for nourishment at a Primrose flower.

One worn male Bronze Copper here today.

Observations made only till 10:30 a.m.

There was a fresh Common Sootywing searching for nectar from White Clover in the back yard.

Always a special little garden. A salute to the Salem County Nature Club!

Broad-winged Skippers still flying here. Just about done back in Glouco. Found one nectaring on a very small patch of Salt Marsh fleabane. Never noticed this plant before in Salem.

Wind was keeping most butterflies grounded here today.
