October 2018 Sightings

Wandered the yard around mid-day and then around 4:30 which is when the long-tailed sk was present. I had 20+ monarchs on each of my trips through the yard; Mexican sunflower was the favorite today. As the log has been showing, there are exceptional numbers of monarchs and ocolas.

Pat saw the Hackberry emperor one more time. Looking more worn with each passing day. An explosion in Monarchs here. Found 17 after 5 p.m. tonight, mostly on Mexican Sunflowers. This is the highest single count here in a number of years.

Very little sign of yesterday's mega flight of Monarchs and dragonflies. Only saw a few dragonflies. Found some nectaring Monarchs on Groundsel-tree (males in bloom) and Seaside Goldenrod. Walked beachfront trail between dune and Bunker Pond. So lovely to see the smorgasbord of nectar in the wide beach / developing dunes and along the trails.

Obs made between 3:15 & 4:45 p.m. Mostly cloudy and 78 degrees. Abundant Frost Asters, and Goldenrods here. Some white flowering eupatorium was still drawing some Monarchs. Needed much more time and maybe a little more sun. Surprised not to see Fiery here today as this is a good spot in October for them. Great potential.

Great way to end a dismal weather weekend. A Long Tailed Skipper & an Ocola Skipper. This is only the 4th Long Tailed sighting here and the first digital images here. Previously seen in 2000,2003,& 2012. Was just about to hit the road for Tall Pines State Preserve when I made one last check of the garden. Good thing I did! Long Tail persisted for some 40 min. or so nectaring on Orange/Red Lantana, Yellow Lantana, Lavendar Buddleia, Sedum "matrona", "Zowie" Zinnias, and Dahlia. Ocola was here only briefly.
