Obs. made from 3:20 to 5:10. Part sun and 77. SW12-15. An exciting find here today. I photographed an Eastern Pine Elfin nectaring on White Dogwood. This is only the 2nd time that I have found this Elfin here. Saw it last in April 2011 along with a Brown Elfin on separate days. That was my only sighting ever for Brown Elfin here as well. I have watched as Virginia Pines have taken over some old fields in the last several years and have suspected at least a small population of Pine Elfin.. Always on the lookout this time of year hoping for another elfin here and today was the day! Adding to the late afternoon was singing Yellow-Throated Vireo & a male Rose-Breasted Grosbeak.

[Thanks for the details, Dave, and congratulations on the finds. jc]

1.5 hr. walk, mostly sunny in the 60's and slightly breezy. Not confident on my Duskywing iding ability so I mark them as spp. but I would say Juvenal's if I would. I assume my image of Eastern Tailed Blue would show size comparison between male and female.

Nice four species puddle party hosted by about 40 Juvenal's (one can barely see the tailed-blues in the photo). I was mostly driving and so did not count many butterflies, but there were dozens of duskywings on the road.

Second stop, 1:30 - 3:30. Bingo for cobweb.

[A significant discovery! Our FOY cobweb report – with multiple individuals and in CMY. We have had only one other report of the species in CMY since 2016 – two individuals at Beaver Swamp WMA last year found by Brian Johnson. Six individuals of the species is the most found in one spot in CMY since you recorded 8 at Belleplain on May 7, 2015. We have been worried about this species. Let's hope this find is the first of others this year! jc]

First stop 11:30. Clear skies, 60, winds sw in the low teens. Primarily here to look for cobweb sk, but no luck. After a bit of a chase my FOY sk turned into a sachem. Frosted elfins doing fine here; count is low as I only count in one direction and someone was walking in front of me on the way in.

[Our FOY sachem – and our first folded wing skipper of the year. Nice find! jc]
