Only second Monarch seen this year. Huge numbers of cabbage Whites daily; even more than usual. By this time usually have plenty of skippers.

Cape May NABA Count- Area 4
Cape May County, NJ

Sunny, 80's. Beautiful day and a successful field day.

The Dion Skipper colony was the big highlight of the day. We dial counted the area and were amazed at the numbers, the activity and the mint fresh beauty of the individuals flying.

Common Wood-Nymph numbers were another happy surprise and this year's timing provided more looks at Rare Skippers, which are at the peak of their flight.

Species count lower than hoped, but more than 700 total individuals was a happy result.

Late in the day stroll through the garden turned up some gems. Juniper Hairstreak was on Boneset, just blooming. Rare Skipper was on Cut-leaf Coneflower. Dion Skipper was on Wild Quinine and cooperatively showed us the topside too (photos shared here).

powerline: 610 entrance and Corson's Tavern rd entrance
Cape May County, NJ

For the second year in a row, I did not see a Dion at the 610 powerline. The other entrance produced just 3. In past years this has been a rich colony. Extensive work on the line with heavy equipment has damaged or destroyed much of the grass associated with Dions, but it was still surprising to see so few and equally surprising to see so few bflys of any kind.

I was working in the yard for a handful of hours and once again there were not many bflys. The broad-wings and sachems are estimates. This has been the poorest year for rare sk's here in many years.
