Dix WMA- Sleepy Orange Colony
Cumberland County, NJ

Very hot, mid-afternoon visit. Not the best time, but plenty of activity. Many of the Sleepy were hiding under leaves, but still several activity flying in the heat. Most pristine fresh, except one (presumed) older generation still holding on.

Cloudless numbers building and all very fresh.

Colony should be at full flight over next couple of weeks. Biting flies were not too bad today.

Harvester a new bug for the yard! My husband Mike saw most of the butterflies today and discovered the Harvester resting on an oak leaf hydrangea leaf alongside our garage.

[Wow, what a find! This is the first report of harvester on our log this year – species number 86. But even more impressively: it might be the first time in our log's history that an observer found this species in their own backyard. Anyone remember a similar report? Chris, please tell Mike he can lead a tour of our yard anytime he would like to! jc]

11:15 - 12:15. I tried to carefully count the first 125 Dions, but soon found it impossible as with each step 3- 7 would take wing. My attention was on the spicebush blooms on the edges of the powerlines searching for broken dash, so I did not transverse the center of the colony where Dions were floating like fireflies; consequently, my number is an estimate. The red-banded hs were easier to count, but once again I know there were many more in the sweet gums in the middle of the area. I have never seen a rbhs give a dorsal view like the one in the photo. The Dion in the photo barely escaped from what I believe is a Phidippus clarus.

I ran inside to get the camera when I saw these two "hybridizing." Turns out upon inspection they are both sachems. Harvey Tomlinson and I have discussed the appearance of many plain golden m. sachems this year. Has anyone else noted this?
