This afternoon around 2:00pm I saw the most incredible blue violet color I have ever seen in the natural world. It was a butterfly flying and I knew it was not a blue - so vivid dark blue violet that it made me gasp. I followed it until it landed very nicely on the trail itself and was able to see it was a White M hairstreak. I have only seen them from the side, and only late in the season around September. What an incredible treat!

[Thank you, Jen, for the delightful description of this beautiful butterfly – and our log's FOY for 2021. jc]

11:00 - 12:30. Mostly cloudy, low 60's. Very weird not to see a Henry's or azure here today. Almost as weird was to find 3 species of duskywings. As if the duskywings aren't difficult enough, notice the the extra white marks on the fw trailing margin on the Juvenal's. I included the pine elfin photo because after much chasing of confusing duskywings it was nice to find a pretty and identifiable bfly.

[Nice list! Our first three skipper day of 2021 and two of them FOYs – sleepy and Horace's. Good work! jc]

Obs.made between 1:20 & 3:15 pm. Mostly to completely cloudy and 58-60. Coppers appear to be having a good first flight. I chased a Variegated Frit around for awhile but it finally got away. Landed just long enough to identify. Surprised not to see Orangetips here yet.

Intermittent sun and took a walk – also working/weeding in the garden here. Several OTs found in power line cut attracted to garlic mustard. Later one flew just outside the garden/parking area. ETB very tiny as was the Pearl. Ran into Dave A. but didn't hear what he had as I left the garden prior to hearing from him.

Obs. made from 1:30 to 4:30, Mostly Cloudy 61-63. This horrible image of an E.Tiger sums up my image capturing for the afternoon. Spent about an hour and a half waiting for sun to bring the Orangetips to flight and chasing them on and off the powerline. They got the best of me this day. Orangetips were all males, apparently emerging late this year for this location.

[Thanks, Dave. That's one of our log's first two tiger swallowtails for 2021 – and the first photo'd. We'll take it! jc]
