May 2021 Sightings

10:45-12:45

late morning around 10am, coming back from birding, one monarch flew across the farmfield.

Although confined to the property for over a week as I worked on a major project, I got to enjoy 12 species of bflys including a perfect summer form qm. Today's sachem was the yard's first fold-wing sk.

A wonderful day to work in the garden. Best butterfly action here so far this spring..

8:00 to 11:15 am. 70 degrees when finished.

11:50 to 1:50 pm. Filtered sun, 70 to 73 degrees. Not sure of the ID on the female duskywing. Comments welcome.

Always nice seeing my first Monarch especially a female ovipositing!

These were all seen in my woods. The cloudywing and zabby were chasing each other.

This worn Lady is the first I've seen here this year.

Not much to see here these days with the landscaper's use of herbicides. A lunch time check only yielded 3 butterflies.

Duskywing was cruising the garden. Eastern Tailed-Blues nectaring on clover. Sunny and mild.

Incidental sighting while working in the yard.

First of Years casually noted in Camden County (undoubtedly late):
5/15 – Red-banded Hairstreak
5/16 – Tiger Swallowtail

Around 5pm, sunny and 82 degrees. Looked to be nectaring on rhododendron blossoms.

Two quick passes by PVST on coral honeysuckle – one in morning, another late afternoon – escaping the camera both times.

1:50 to 3:45 pm. Sunny, breezy, temps in upper 80s.

I think the third photo is a female Sachem.

Also had an 8 Spotted Forester moth

10:30-11am, sunny 70 degrees

Not much seen while working in yard. One female zab pursued by several males. Also here apparently same sachems as reported yesterday.

At work today. Most Butterflies were seen at the Elkington pond property on North Burden hill road. The Dusted Skippers were seen on a powerline east of there.

I’ve never had caterpillars this early in the season
