April 2022 Sightings

I can expect to see these frequently now in the damp parts of my garden, early Spring. This one rose up bright blue as I walked by, fled to invasive muscari, giving me time to get out my cell phone.

Cool and windy early, but as the day warmed up the butterflies were more active. Thanks to Tom Bailey for much helpful information and helping us find our first Hoary Elfin!

Sunny at 53 degrees

1 mourning cloak sunning itself on the sand road around midday.

10:30 am to 1:40 pm. Sunny, windy, temps 46 degrees to start and 53 degrees when finished. Found the first Hoary Elfin at 11 am. Greg Prelich & Jeanine Apgar arrived later and we found a second elfin. The Am. Lady was actively nectaring on Bearberry blossoms. A bonus was my FOY Fence Lizard.

[Good finds! These Bailey/Apgar/Prelich hoary elfins and American lady are our log's FOYs for both species. The hoary report is also our log's second-earliest ever, later than only 3/30/12, a spring when more than a dozen species set early reports that still stand. jc]

Plus many tiny, hard-to-follow, flying prong-gilled mayflies. Sharing a photo of one that cooperatively perched on our windshield.

Like the last 3 years, my first American copper had to be chased while doing yard work.

FOY Spring Azure

Henry's Elfins high in American Hollies; 2 chasing each other at 3 different locations.

Bright sun around noon.

Sunny at mid 50s around 11:30am

3:00, sunny, 61 degrees. Mourning Cloak nectaring on Common Chickweed.

While driving around (12:30 or so)

61 degrees, full sun around 2pm. Five male Falcate and two females. Pictured is one of those females.

1:00-2:00pm.
I was looking for a falcate orange tip, and sure enough, I saw my FOY today - it was a male - and it would NOT land for a picture. Sunny and 60 degrees.
