June 2023 Sightings

Incidental sightings while looking for odes. FOY Least Skipper for me.

I saw a harvester sitting on the side of the green trail between 10:30-11:00 am. I wasn't able to get a photo before it flew off. At 3:00 pm I saw a second individual on the other side of the park and as soon as I hit the camera shutter it flew off! [2nd report of Harvester this year. TB]

Observations made between 12 and 1:30. Lots of Arrowood, viburnum, privet and Elderberry in bloom. I think I missed one or two hair streaks that zoomed off just as I was walking down the trail.

Between 12:30-2:30 pm. The "blue" was puddling and I could see through binoculars it was NOT an et blue, so it must have been a summer azure.

Obs. 3.20-3.45. Sunny and hot. We need rain, rain and more rain very badly.

The VF is only the second one I've seen this year at LL.

Incidental sightings while birding. Cloudy, temperature in mid-60s, breezy.

OBS. 11.15-11.45

Obs. 9.30-11.00, overcast sky.

Pollinator garden starting to look good. Coreopsis is dominant now. V. Fritillary and 3 Clouded Sulphurs around the garden. Peck's Skippers all worn.

Obs. 12.15-1.00. Fields are very dry.

An abundance of Cabbage Whites today.

Sun and clouds, 60’s. 3 Delaware Skippers were nice to see. [FOY Delaware Skipper. TB]

9 am to 1:45 pm. Sunny, low 70s. [FOY Georgia Satyr. FOY Swarthy Skipper reported from 2 counties today. TB]

2pm. Sunny, breezy and cool. ETB was nectaring on clover.

10-12 pm gorgeous day!! Zabulon Skippers abound!

Very brief visit.

Incidental sightings while gardening. Question Mark was laying eggs on a Dwarf Hackberry (Celtis tenuifolia) that is coming up in my perennial garden, that I hack back nearly to the ground each spring to keep it as a small shrub. Its abundant lush leaves always pull in lots of egg-laying butterflies.

Incidental sightings while gardening. Hayhurst's Scallopwing was perching in the garden; did not see it on nectar (which is fairly scarce still).

1:00-2:30 pm.

75 degrees, partly cloudy and breezy. Anglewing was on fruit dish. Monarch caterpillar was on Butterfly Weed.

High counts of Spring Azures and Cabbage Whites for Lumberton Leas.

Obs. 9.30-10.00. Chilly conditions. Obs. June 4: 10.45-11.45. Sunny and warm.

Guided walk from 9-11 am. I have never seen a Summer Azure with its wings open; very cool dark margins on the forewings! They were also puddling near the lake edge.

End of a gardening afternoon saw the azure nectaring on clover.

Very hazy from the fire in Ocean County drifting over to Burlington. Continue to see large numbers of Spring Azures here at Lumberton Leas.
