Obs. made from 12:50 to 3, sunny and near 80. Was focused on finding Crossline Skipper today. As it turned out I mis-identified one in the field as Tawny-edged but after reviewing my images it was Crossline. Spent most of my time between the butterfly garden and the dredge pit. 80% of the Sachems were found on eupatorium around the perimeter of the pit.

Obs. made from 4-6:20, sunny and 92 degrees. Observed at least 7 Harvesters today, 2 males and 5 females. The females were all ovipositing. One image appears to be of a cluster of eggs. I have only observed single egg laying previously. It is no surprise that they are still active since they have such a short development cycle, about 3 weeks. It was also interesting to see the changes to the forest floor post tornado. I mentioned previously an abundance of Tulip Poplar saplings. Now there are numerous stands of Thoroughwort and Goldenrod.

[Superb documentation of ovipositing by this beguiling, unorthodox species. jc]

Lots of action in the garden today.

[Jack Miller has identified the photo'd skipper as a "golden" sachem. This is his term for particularly yellow sachems. He notes the keys for separating from Delaware visible here:

"Golden sachems display a fine black (dark) submarginal line on the hw (the line is also present on the submarginal fw, but sometimes less pronounced) that Delawares lack. Also, upon close inspection of Karen's photo, there are slightly darker areas near the outer 'tips' of both the fw and hw."

Jack believes "golden" sachems can be easily mis-ID'd as Delawares and that we should be more alert to this possible mix-up.

Thanks to Jack for his help with this ID and the alert. jc]

The RSP today was the first one here in many weeks and is only the 4th this year, making this is a record breaking low year for the species here (the highest single day count here for rsp is 27). I went through this summer's reports for RSP on the SJBP log and noticed that although reported almost daily, numbers are usually just 1 or 2. There are still Sootywing cats in the yard.
